Rio de Janeiro has long been regarded as the Carnival (Carnaval in portuguese) Capital of the World. The Carnaval of Rio is not only the biggest Carnival, it as also a benchmark against which every other carnival is compared and one of the most interesting artistic events on the Globe. Almost everyone has heard of the Rio Carnaval. Foreign visitors to it alone number around 500,000 every year.
As one of the most famous bossa-nova songs from the 50’s sings, “Copacabana, princesinha do mar…” (Copacabana, little princess of the sea…), this neighborhood is the jewel and post card of Rio de Janeiro. There is so much to see and to experience, that it is almost impossible to describe it in a few words.
Copacabana offers a large variety of shops, restaurants, bars and the great view of the beach with the Sugar Loaf on its left end. It is very close to the neighbors areas Ipanema, Botafogo and Urca.
Ipanema is one of the most sang cities in Rio de Janeiro and even in the world, famous for the laidback people, tanned and worked out bodies and lively with shopping and great restaurants and cafés.
This neighborhood offers more than you can see at the first sight. You shouldn’t miss a walk on the “calçadão” (sidewalk of the beach) in the afternoon or on the rocks at the left end of the beach, called “Arpoador”, which offers great views of Ipanema beach and of the small beach “Praia do Diabo”. Try a coconut water at any of the kiosks, typical “carioca” (people from Rio), delicious and very healthy indeed.
Leblon is the neighborhood limited by Ipanema, Lagoa and Gávea. Its beach is actually an extension of Ipanema beach, just separated by a canal that comes from Lagoa. This neighborhood is considered more chic and tranquil than its sister Ipanema.
Less touristic, Leblon has a different character than the other districts of Rio. It offers not only stunning natural views, with delineated exotic mountains in the sky, but also very good shopping centers and excellent restaurants and bars. It’s really worthwhile to spend at least a couple of days there, if not your entire stay, if you want to feel more as a local.
